If you could ask your mayor anything, what would it be? In honor of the Best of York issue, we gave York mayor Kim Bracey a pop personality quiz, and here’s how she answered.
Name: Kim Bracey
Hometown: York
I believe that the most important quality for a mayor is:
the ability to connect with people.
My favorite thing to do with my family in York is:
take in a Revolution baseball game.
The most important accomplishment I have made since being in office is:
a. being elected as the city’s first African American and second female mayor.
b. my “nine in nine” program (nine initiatives to be completed during my first nine months in office).
c. the completion of city improvements like the Northwest Triangle project and South Side improvements.
d. the start of new community-centered events such as the Jazz Festival, Restaurant Week and the Minority & Women Owned Business seminar.
For someone taking a day trip to York, I would recommend:
Come early, enjoy breakfast at any one of our delightful eateries; do some sightseeing, and visit the Heritage Trust venues to experience our historicalness; stop by another “third place,” Martin Library, for a quiet break; then head off to lunch at one of our fabulous restaurants; then you must do a little shopping along Beaver and Philadelphia Streets and while there check out the art at the galleries; and finally, finish up with a splendid dining experience for either dinner or just a late snack before getting back on the road.
So far, my favorite moment as mayor was:
meeting the President of the United States, Barack Obama.
To balance being in office with my family life, I:
draw strength from my faith and my close friends, who will hold me accountable and be completely honest.
My favorite place to eat in York is:
ahhh… too many favorite places to name just one.
If I could do anything besides being mayor, I would choose:
a. a job within York’s school system.
b. to continue my service in the U.S. Air Force.
c. to be a social worker.
d. a construction job on a York City improvement project.
e. Other: to work as an executive director/CEO/president of a non-profit organization.
In my opinion, being mayor has changed me the most by:
creating opportunities and the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people.
I’m so passionate about my city because:
it is a great community on the brink of something and is filled with unimaginable generosity, commitment, dedicated and compassionate people who desire to see York be a great place to live, work and play!
