Men’s and women’s jeans are alike in that they are usually made from denim (preferably Italian), but that’s where the similarities stop. Where women choose their denim to either hide or show curves, men choose denim for simpler reasons. That doesn’t mean men have it any easier, though. Approaching the murky denim waters can be daunting, but have no fear. Our jeans guide will keep you afloat and fashionable.

Dapper Details
Denim should never be boring. Here’s what to look for to make sure that your jeans are as polished as you are.
- Avoid branding and eye-catching details. Unless you’re a country music rock star, don’t buy jeans with embellishments on the pockets, and even then it’s questionable.
- Cuff your jeans for a refreshing, cool look, especially if the inside seams are fun.
- Contrasting or blue “invisible” seams are both great. We recommend mixing your wardrobe up with both styles.

Get Fit
Overall, men can find jeans in any style that fit; however, most men typically buy a size bigger than they need. Try a size smaller than you normally would and do the finger check: you shouldn’t be able to put more than two fingers in the waistband. Finding a good tailor is always important too. That way, your jeans fit just the way you like them. Jeans that fit well are always the most flattering.
- Slim fit jeans should be slim, but not skin-tight. When properly fitted, this style is great for thin legs.
- Straight-leg jeans are great for an athletic build. Also, in a high-waisted version, these will help elongate short legs.
- Relaxed jeans should not be baggy; instead, they should sit snugly at or below the waist. In a low rise, these are great for men who have an average to heavy build.

Wash-up
What may seem like a trivial thing is actually crucial; the wash of your jean can make or break the rest of your outfit.
- Vintage washes are great for a cool, eclectic look. Pair these with leather jackets, blazers with pocket squares, and stylish shirts.
- Medium blue is best for casual wear. Pair this with your favorite jersey, t-shirt or polo.
- Dark rinses offer a more refined, classy look—and they’re the best for day-to-night wear. Pair these with sport coats and button-downs.
