York City Boutique Week
Downtown Inc. introduces York City Boutique Week, September 4-8, highlighting downtown York’s small and independently owned home and apparel retailers. The week includes special events like trunk shows, demonstrations, a designer consignment pop-up shop by fashion blogger Hilary
Arthur of Arthur&Daughters.com, “Sidewalk Sale” First Friday and a fashion show. Promotional tote bags, handmade by The Bee—York’s creative repurposing collective, will be available for sale at select participating York City Boutique Week retailers.
In addition to a week’s worth of special events and demonstrations (including how to dress a stylish table for fall entertaining with Susquehanna Style’s Hannah Wigton), York City Boutique Week will be punctuated by a fashion show on Friday, September 7, at 7:30 pm, at Central Market, located at 34 West Philadelphia Street. The fashion show is a highlight of September’s “Sidewalk Sale” First Friday and features fashion and accessories available from participating York City Boutique Week retailers coordinated with students from the Art Institute of York. Also be sure to pose for Susquehanna Style’s “Style Scene” to appear in a future issue, online and on Facebook.

Although the summer months have come and gone, outdoor festivals don’t have to blow away with the autumn foliage. The 13th annual Landis Woods Outdoor Art Show, which will be held on Saturday, September 29, will feature a wide variety of artwork for guests to peruse. The media available will range from watercolors to photography and from sculpture to jewelry, ensuring that art appreciators of all kinds will be able to find their perfect purchase. For those looking for a chance to get lucky, $75 certificates toward your composition of choice will be raffled hourly from 10:30am to 4:30pm. If you’re a lover of craft brews and notable ales, you may be surprised to find a bevy of
beverages in your own backyard. The Susquehanna Ale Trail is a compilation of nine locally owned breweries, brewpubs and craft brewing outlets in the Susquehanna Valley. This Ale Trail, created by the York County Convention & Visitors Bureau in 2012, provides a self-guided tour that allows visitors to experience the area’s finest beers at their own pace. Tours of these establishments, paired with tastings, leave the visitor with a more complete understanding of the brewing process and the craft beer industry. Where can you get home design inspiration, make lists of ideas, search for specific products, browse through professionals in the area and share on your social media pages—all in one place? Right at your fingertips with the Houzz app! The free Houzz interior design app contains over 557,000 example photos of any room or outdoor area, where a vendor can tag furniture, share a price and advertise other similar items. The “Photos,” “Products” and “Professionals” tabs are neatly categorized for easy browsing, and each page you view can be added to one of your specific “Ideabooks.” Under the “Ideabooks” tab, you can search other users’ lists and add new ideas to yours. Sites With Style: Arthur & Daughters
With a camera in hand, Hilary Arthur is rediscovering Central Pennsylvania’s local stores and fashionable residents. Arthur, who worked in fashion and retail for 17 years and spent 14 of those in New York City, began her blog Arthur & Daughters upon her return to York. “The Blog” chronicles Arthur’s favorite finds at local boutiques, while “The (never ending) List” gives viewers a taste of her fashion sense and the items she loves. The list features clothing and accessories such as overalls, maxi skirts, woven bracelets, ballet shoes and tropical prints. The fashionista’s blog also encompasses a “Sightings” page, where she features stylish locals.
During the York City Boutique Week September 4-8, Arthur is opening an online women’s consignment shop via her blog and will have a temporary pop-up shop next to Park Street Pantry. Craft beer enthusiasts now have a new destination to sample rare and hard-to-find potent potables with the much-anticipated opening of the Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York. Boasting 30 regularly-rotating taps and an extensive bottle menu of specialty imports and Belgian brews, this beer bar has found its home in the historic National House on the corner of Market and Beaver Streets. The Holy Hound strives to be a gathering place for self-professed lovers of barley and hops in an eclectic, casual setting with its fair share of old-world charm.
