Market Square Concerts presents Jasper String Quartet and Stuart Malina

On Saturday, September 21 at 8 pm in Market Square Church Jasper String Quartet, winner of the Cleveland Quartet Award, and Stuart Malina, pianist and Artistic Director of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, will open Market Square Concerts’ 32nd season with a program featuring one of the most lyrical and elegant Haydn string quartets, Op. 76 in D Major, deeply romantic String Quartet in G Major Op. 106 by Antonín Dvořák, as well as intensely dramatic Piano Quintet Op. 57 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Tickets are $30, seniors $25, college students with valid ID $5, free admission for school-age children and $5 for one accompanying adult for all concerts. Winner of the prestigious 2012 CMA Cleveland Quartet Award, the Jasper String Quartet has been hailed as “sonically delightful and expressively compelling” (The Strad) and “powerful” (The New York Times). Based in New Haven, Connecticut, the Jasper Quartet recently released two highly acclaimed albums for the Sono Luminus label, featuring the works of Beethoven, Schubert, and Aaron Jay Kernis. After winning the Grand Prize and the Audience Prize in the 2008 Plowman Chamber Music Competition, the Jasper Quartet went on to win the Grand Prize at the 2008 Coleman Competition, First Prize at Chamber Music Yellow Springs 2008, and the Silver Medal at both the 2008 and 2009 Fischoff Chamber Music Competitions. In addition, they recently completed their 2010-2012 position as Ensemble-in-Residence at Oberlin Conservatory.
Now in his 13th season as Music Director and Conductor of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Maestro Stuart Malina has earned a reputation for orchestra building and multi-faceted versatility. An accomplished pianist, Maestro Malina has impressive credits as soloist and chamber musician. In Harrisburg, he has had annual performances with Market Square Concerts, as well as the highly successful Stuart and Friends concerts with members of the HSO. He has performed concertos in Harrisburg, Greensboro, Charleston, New York and Chautauqua, most often conducting from the keyboard.
