Young Writer's Workshop
Like to play with words? Want to become a better writer? Spend a week this summer exploring the literary arts.
The writing camp will cultivate curiosity and creativity in young writers, offering them the skills and tools they need to strengthen their work. Students will study masterful texts, dissecting them in order to gain an understanding of what makes the writing powerful. Students will then create a body of their own work, including polished poems, stories, and essays.
Morning exercises will focus on developing critical and creative thinking skills, as students
practice writing several types of persuasive essays. Students will also have the opportunity to hone their timed essay skills necessary for examinations like the SAT. The afternoon workshops will feature craft lessons on poetry and fiction, combined with writing exercises.
The workshop will be led by Lancaster’s poet laureate Daina Savage, who has authored
More than 3,000 stories for magazines and newspapers, and Dr. George Scouten, Academic Dean at the prestigious Linden Hall. Dr. Scouten is also a former South Carolina Teacher of the Year for his work in writing instruction.
Held on the scenic campus of Linden Hall in the town of Lititz, the writing camp is an
opportunity for students to spend a week of intensive study in fiction writing, poetry writing, creative nonfiction. The camp is open to both girls and boys entering grades 7-12 for the 2013-2014 school year. The cost is $300.
