Concert: Phil Haynes and No Fast Food
Stretansky Concert Hall, Susquehanna University Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania
Drummer Phil Haynes, saxophonist Dave Liebman and bassist Drew Gress have been seasoned, schooled and honing their craft in notable bands going back to the ’60s.
Phil Haynes was a student of and drummer for the trio of trumpet master Paul Smoker when both lived in Iowa. He moved to New York in the 1980s and participated in that city’s forward-looking music scene for more than two decades. Haynes has been featured on more than 50 LP and CD releases by numerous American and European record labels. International media have compared his drumming to masters Jack DeJohnette, Roy Haynes and Elvin Jones, and his compositions to Duke Ellington, Charles Ives, Charles Mingus and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Drew Gress has worked in the ensembles of Paul Smoker, Tim Berne, Fred Hersch, John Hollenebck and many others, with his own recordings garnering great reviews. Dave Liebman played in the early ‘70s bands of Miles Davis and has made his own mark on jazz for the last 40 years.
