Bobbin Lace
to
Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen North Queen Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603
What fiber art was so valuable it fueled a smuggling industry and financed wars? Bobbin lace became popular during the Renaissance. Made by artisans and worn by royalty, it was the status symbol of the 17th and 18th centuries.
Although not well known in the United States, bobbin lace making is still enjoyed by creators around the world. It can be a springboard for creative forms from jewelry to fences, from fiber sculpture to trim for a wedding veil. While it looks complicated, there are only two very easy movements, and you only ever use 4 bobbins at a time.
During this class, students will learn the basics: how to wind bobbins, how to make a pricking (pattern), how to hang bobbins, the basic stitches, and will work on a beginner’s piece. Students will work on their piece in between class sessions and are encouraged to bring any snags or problems to the second session for help.
