The Couple
Andrew & Sara Bozich Surra
The Big Day
January 8, 2011
The Theme
Navy blue and fuschia with a party atmosphere (thus the popularity of Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” at the reception). White blooms (hydrangeas, stock, tulips and roses) made up the bride and groom’s florals, while bouquets and boutonnieres featured fuschia roses. Vases were wrapped in fabric for a softer, more sophisticated look. A fake (read: indestructible) rose pomander was purchased for Andy’s niece, aka “the Tasmanian devil flower girl.”
The Details
Andy’s mom baked 90 dozen cookies and his uncle made biscotti; a friend contributed pizzelles. Add some decorated takeout boxes and...voila! Fill-your-own favors. In a creative move, the "cinnamon roll" wedding cake had turtle layers, and cupcakes were filled with caramel apple or mint truffle.
The Threads
Sara found “the dress” at one store, four sizes too large and several notches above her price point. The couple was paying for the wedding. She called Taylored for You and found it, smaller, with a smaller price tag. The one-shoulder dress with its glam belt achieved the look Sara was going for: pretty, not sexy.
The Elements
Sara’s faux fur jacket by Anthropologie (via ebay) was apropos, since the January twilight ceremony coincided with a day of flurries. Fortunately the photographer loves snow—and a challenge. The result? Some extraordinary photos, albeit outside in the dark and cold. But still.
The Point Of It All
“I was getting to tie the rest of my life to my best friend.” — Andy
The Best and Worst Ideas
Sara's approximately 600 requests to elope--best. Being her own wedding planner--worst.
The Challenge
For a local work project, Andy’s dad had stayed with Andy and Sara for six months (“more like a year,” jokes Sara). According to Andy, they hit it off so well he spent the reception “following my dad around trying to dance with my own wife.”
The Mistake
In Andy’s version of this story, he did hear Sara’s request, several times, that the cake not be smashed into her face. This is where it gets fuzzy. Allegedly Andy grabbed “way too much cake, to the point where my palm was full.” He meant to “just dab a little icing on her nose.” Then he thought, “I’m in here, I might as well...”
