The Wiebners, Lancaster
April 27, 2013
THE THEME:
Spring inside and out, with brilliant yellows, gray and ivory at a bright yellow barn. Literary touches from these English teachers, with a vintage typewriter and, of course, books.
THE CEREMONY:
Vows described “three things we love about each other,” from selflessness to trust and lightheartedness.
THE DETAILS:
Custom “peg people” cake topper, made from actual photos of the couple in their wedding outfits. Sparkling lights and cheery touches: gerbera daisies, buttery forsythia and freesia, sunny groomsmen’s ties, socks and boutonnieres. Dandelion-yellow bridesmaid shoes. Gifts galore for the bridesmaids, Lancaster treats for the hotel guests and Moravian stars from the Landis Valley gift shop for everyone. The bride in a strapless gown with an embellished band, A-line skirt, lace motifs and vintage lace scallop at the hem and bridesmaids in scoop-back, quarry-gray silk dupioni.
THE COLLECTIONS:
With Dave on beer patrol, they tucked in a nice assortment of craft beers (strawberry wheat and pale ale), while the bride’s side made the centerpieces and paper goods.
THE HITS:
Filet mignon (for the steak and potato folks), mushroom ravioli (for the vegans), and prosciutto-wrapped scallops that everyone was stalking the servers for. The 13-state guest list fell hard for the Amish photo props, while the groomsmen rocked to “Sexy and I Know It” with their own props: undies worn over their suits.
THE FAMILY TIES:
A vintage sixpence completing the “something borrowed” poem (“and sixpence for her shoe”), to be shared with cousins, whose bridal shoes will hold the same coin. Late relatives were celebrated at the event. The couple now treasures the flower boxes, a legacy planted by Dave’s grandmother, who passed away soon after the wedding.
THE PROPOSAL:
Blindfolding a starving Christin on their seventh dating anniversary, Dave drove until the road ran out, right onto his grandparents’ farm to the meadow where they had their first date. Christin picked up what she thought was a blanket but turned out to be a soccer team sweatshirt with “Orth” on the back (Dave coaches). As realization dawned, she turned around to find him on one knee, champagne and ring in hand.
THE GETAWAY:
A mini-moon at the Eden Resort, then to Belize, where it was Dave’s idea to swim with the sharks, but Christin was the first overboard.
