Central PA has so many scenic parks, unique architecture, and killer sunsets that it can be hard to choose that perfect location. We spoke with Stephanie Fletcher, owner and photographer at Philter Photo, about some of the most popular regional spots for engagement photos. “Picking the location always starts with the couple’s styles. I want to make sure our backdrop matches their personality and style,” said Fletcher.
We’ve rounded up some of Fletcher’s favorite spots for engagement photos for your convenience!
1. The Capitol
501 N 3rd Street, Harrisburg, PA 17120
Nothing beats the classic architecture of our state capitol. Designed in 1902 in a Beaux-Arts style with hints of Renaissance themes throughout the complex, former President Teddy Roosevelt called the building “the handsomest building I ever saw” at its dedication in 1906. The exterior of the capitol is sure to be open for photos while the interior will definitely take some planning ahead.
2. Overlook Park
2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601
This classic park spans 140 acres and features pine tree lined pathways throughout the park, perfect for that idyllic smooch shot. Sunsets are also a must at this park, but beware it may be busy with other photographers. The park also includes a skating rink, outdoor pool, skate park, library, and pond so there truly are many photo spot possibilities.
3. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
1700 Hawk Mountain Rd. Kempton, PA 19529
With incredible views spanning the Susquehanna Valley and numerous large birds and wildlife, this spot is for an adventurous couple looking to show their love of nature. There are over eight miles of trails and 155 bird species present in the park at any time.

6. Pine Street parking garage in Harrisburg
While parking garages may be an unconventional location, it’s all about the lighting when capturing portraits. “I am a huge light over location [person] so scouting for photo spots, I’m always keeping an eye on what direction the sun is setting and where the light will be most complimentary to my subjects,” said Fletcher. Her favorite for photo shoots is Pine Street garage in Harrisburg. With good lighting, almost any photo theme can work. Fletcher has even done photoshoots for couples in construction zones of their soon-to-be homes!
7. Bullfrog Valley Pond and Trails
400-470 Bullfrog Valley Road, Hummelstown, PA 17036
