Pennsylvania College of Art & Design N. Prince Street, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603
In August 2013, Tom Bejgrowicz and Jennifer Martin returned to her family's home state to immerse themselves in photographing the geographic region known as the Black Belt of Alabama. It is here that cotton thrived, thanks to plentiful artesian wells, in the rich, dark earth across eighteen counties. In their project proposal, Tom and Jennifer note that their "...goal is not to document tourist-driven, southern clichés but, instead, to document the true character that encompasses all that we love about Alabama. [They] previously collaborated on a 2005 photographic study of an abandoned Creosote Creek community in Tarrant, Ala." "Black Belt of Alabama" is a cultural experience, week-long adventure, photographic exploration and design challenge, all in one. During the November 18 artist talk, Tom and Jennifer will discuss fundraising for the project, planning the trip, anecdotes about their cultural experience, share the photographic essay itself, and discuss the design process for a book that is being published.
