INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
In commemoration of International Woman’s Day, CALC presents a talk on Film and Gender Discrimination in the Arts by Nicoletta Marini-Maio, Associate Professor of Italian and Film Studies at Dickinson College.
ARTEMISIA, A Film View of an Early Femal Artist Artemisia Gentileschi, (1593-c.1656), now recognized as one of the great Italian Baroque artists, faced a society that considered women as the property of male relatives and excluded them from artistic careers. Artemisia, a 1997 biopic by French director Agnes Merlet highlights difficulties faced by female artists in the 17th century, but it also controversially omits reference to the notorious rape and forced marriage of the artist.
