Market Square Concerts presents Peter Orth, Piano
Market Square Presbyterian Church S. 2nd Street, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17101
On Saturday, October 10, at 8 pm in Market Square Presbyterian Church, pianist Peter Orth will open Market Square Concerts’ 2015-16 season with a program featuring music by two giants of Russian Romanticism, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin. The juxtaposition of these great composers will showcase two distinctly different approaches to the expressive possibilities of the piano. Scriabin’s 24 Preludes are a testament to his belief that the piano is capable of communicating the most subtle aspects of human emotions, while Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 1 is a great example of his approach to the piano as an instrument capable of producing orchestral richness. There will be a pre-concert talk with Dr. Truman Bullard at 7:15 pm.
Pennsylvania-native, pianist Peter Orth, winner of the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition, has been heard as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, as well as the orchestras of Detroit, Montreal, Pittsburgh, and Saint Louis. In February 2010, he gave a solo recital at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His recent recital at Alice Tully Hall was greeted by three standing ovations and praise in both the The New York Times and The New York Sun. Writing in The New York Times, Anthony Tommasini spoke about the tenderness and fervor of his playing, describing it as “...one long arc of inspiration.” Mr. Orth has played under conductors Charles Dutoit, Zubin Mehta, James Conlon, Leonard Slatkin and Aldo Ceccato, performing in Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Kennedy Center and Chicago’s Orchestra Hall.
