Johnny Rivers began his career as a nightclub singer in the 60’s and within three nights of performing, had a line around the block of fans wanting to see him sing and play guitar. Once he landed his first big hit with a live cover of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis,” which reached No. 2 on the Pop charts, Johnny Rivers had made the successful transition from nightclub entertainer to chart-busting Pop singer.
A string of many hits followed, including another Chuck Berry cover, “Maybelline,” followed by “Mountain of Love,” and ”Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son.” In 1966, Rivers scored his biggest hit ever with “Poor Side of Town,” which became a No. 1 single. More hits followed, including “Secret Agent Man,” “Baby, I Need Your Lovin’,” and a cover of the Miracles’ “The Tracks Of My Tears.”
In total, Johnny Rivers placed seventeen songs in the Top 40, ten of which were Top Ten, from 1964 to 1977. He has sold well over 25 million records and was versatile enough to do Folk songs, Blues, covers of old-time Rock and Roll songs, and original material, all of them in his own unique style. He was also adept as a songwriter, guitarist, and producer.
