Colonial to Contemporary: Tape Weaving
to
PA Guild of Craftsmen Center for American Craft N. Queen St., Lancaster, Pennsylvania 17603
Handwoven tape ribbon was vital to the lives of colonial (and locally, PA German) farm families throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. In these pre-zipper days, because of their strength and colorful patterns, these long, narrow bands of cloth were used traditionally for many tying needs – men’s suspenders, garters, apron straps, and drawstrings for women’s petticoats, to mention a few.
In this weaving workshop, you’ll explore the colonial history of tape. Then you’ll get to weave historical patterns, using traditional fibers and colors. Tape is also beautiful and useful in contemporary life. You can use tape for similar practical uses as our forebears, or create decorations like key chains, holiday garlands, or lanyards.
