Celebrating The Late Maurice Sendak: Following Sendak’s death on May 8, 2012, The New York Times obituary called him “the most important children’s book artist of the 20th century.”  From the age of twelve, when he saw the Disney film, Fantasia, he set his direction toward illustration.  His first images were published in a 1947 textbook, he went on to illustrate the Little Bear series of books, and Isaac Bashevis Singer’s first children’s story, entitled, Zlateh the Goat (Newbery Award).  His books, Where the Wild Things Are  (adapted to stage in 1979) and In the Night Kitchen received praise and criticism to the point of censorship for their drawings.  He wrote more than 15 books including, Outside Over There; Mommy?; Seven Little Monsters; Higglety Pigglety Pop! and Bumble-Ardy which was published eight months prior to his death.  He illustrated more than sixty books and received numerous awards, including the Caldecott and Hans Christian Andersen Award for children’s book illustration.
