4th Annual Mental Illness Awareness Walk
to
Veterans Memorial Park Vander Ave at Rockdale Ave, York, Pennsylvania 17403
In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of NAMI's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Since 1990, mental health advocates across the country have joined together during the first full week of October to celebrate.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) PA York County is holding a Walk to conclude this year’s Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 6-12, 2013. The Awareness Walk will be held October 12, 2013 at 10:00 am beginning at Veterans Memorial Park, 940 Vander Avenue, York. Registration begins at 8:30 am. The walk is open to ALL ages and there is no registration fee. Well behaved pets, restrained on a leash, are also welcome. There are two different walk routes based on walking ability and those who prefer not to walk are encouraged to come as cheer leaders. This is the fourth time that NAMI has hosted a walk of this magnitude in York County. Last year over $14,000 was raised and 220 walkers helped to bring awareness about mental illness to the forefront.
Dennis Marion will serve as Grand Marshal for the walk this year. Mr. Marion is the Deputy Secretary of OMHSAS (Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services). Special guest, Mayor Bracey, will also be in attendance to cheer the walkers on.
This year’s walk will include give-a ways and contest prizes. Radio station 92.7 WKZF will be on hand, as well as J Magic Man, the roving magician, who will keep you in awe. Free lunch and snacks will be provided for this fun, free, family event.
T-shirts will be available walk day on a first come, first serve basis to those walkers who have $15 in donations. Shirts and shirt sizes are not guaranteed. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Call 848-3784, email namiyc@gmail.com , or visit www.namiyork.org for more information.
