Alison Lanyon is a Co-Anchor of ABC27’s Daybreak morning show and just celebrated her 10th year being a co-anchor on Daybreak and 18 years being in front of the camera. Through these difficult times, she has been a source of inspiration because of her comforting smile and constant professionalism.
Who has been your biggest influence?
I could make a list a mile long. I work with some amazingly strong women at abc27 and my close friends are all incredibly talented working moms. If I had to choose one, however, it would be my own mother, Adele. She taught me so many important lessons by her dedication and selflessness. My mom worked full-time as a teacher but also found time to be at every sporting event, every play, every practice and still have a home-cooked meal on the table for family dinners each night. My mom bent over backward to make sure my brother and I had every opportunity imaginable. I am so grateful she gave me that wonderful example as I now raise my own family. And when I watch her with my own children right now, I realize how lucky we all are to have her influence in our lives.
What motivated you to be involved in your community?
I have always felt so blessed to have a successful career, a family and a community that has always been so supportive. I like to give back whenever time allows; either volunteering for Junior Achievement, scaling down a skyscraper to raise money for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, doing a story about a special need in the community or helping to start the first-ever 100 Women Reading event. I look at each opportunity to volunteer as an adventure and a way to meet even more amazing people.
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would say don't be so hard on yourself all the time. Surround yourself with people who build you up and cheer for you. I promise - in hindsight - you will never regret an ounce of energy or time spent with your children. Do it all with them and soak up all the sweet moments when they're little. Travel. Exercise. Also.. go to bed. You won't sleep much later in life. LOL
What’s your idea of self care?
Being that I anchor the morning show, SLEEP is my number one priority when it comes to self care. I nap whenever humanly possible! I also feel so much better when I regularly exercise and right now long walks with my new puppy are so therapeutic. I love quiet time - no tv, no music. It's soothing to me after I leave work. And I also need to remind myself that when I'm burning the candle at both ends, it's okay to cut myself some slack every once in a while. That's often easier said than done.
What message do you have for the future generations of women?
Find your passion. Find the thing that you can't imagine NOT doing and go for it! It's so vital to love what you do. And follow your heart. Make decisions that will bring you peace. Don't ever settle if it doesn't feel right - and don't ever turn down an adventure.
