THE THEME
Black and white glamour. This urban wedding was set in the Yorktowne Hotel, with its chandeliers, ornate windows and high ceilings. Sophisticated touches ran throughout, with a black and white damask motif, white chair covers wrapped with black bows, and the reflected light of hundreds of candles in the ceremony’s Mirror Room. The iconic photographs taken on the roof show York City—and the historic hotel—at its best.
THE DETAILS
The wedding party included the couple’s children, 4-year-old Sophie and 18-month-old Parker, as flower girl and ring bearer. (To be safe, the best man held the rings.) The ornate scrolls, script and Swarovski crystals on the invitation suite signaled guests that this would be an elegant wedding. Handmade wrought-iron candelabras were strung with crystals, and candles lined the fireplace and windowsills. The cuisine was chic and upscale, with filet mignon, crab cakes, baked brie, scallops and macadamia nut-encrusted chicken. A beautiful antiqued frame made by a bridesmaid held seating cards, while the florals injected the only notes of color, adding hot pinks and purples with lilies, roses, ranunculus, freesia and callas.
THE THREADS
The dramatic bias flange skirt of the ivory “fit & flare” bridal gown was created with hand-cut strips of organza, echoed in the bridesmaid’s grey cocktail dresses. The handmade black sashes the bridesmaids and flower girl wore contrasted nicely with the bride’s diamond sash. The men wore Vera Wang tuxes with silver vests, while Parker’s tux matched Dan’s blackon- black. (A fun addition were Parker’s toddler-sized black & white vans).
THE RELATIONSHIP
If the original vows didn’t get to you, nothing could: Nichole’s read: “I believe God puts people in our lives for a reason, and I believe he put you in mine to show me that there really is such a thing as true love….You are my hero, my inspiration, my best friend and my soul mate…thank you for believing in me even when I don’t believe in myself.” An ice sculpture of the Philadelphia LOVE logo recalled Dan’s proposal to Nichole at a U2 concert in Philly. The proposal was delayed when the concert was cancelled; Dan took it “as a sign I should wait to buy the ring”. He found one, they held onto their tickets, and when they went to hear the band a year later, Dan finally proposed. Guests danced to classical renditions of U2 songs by the Vitamin String Orchestra.
