When I was teaching (before I opened my boutique) one of the rules I set for myself when shopping was if I couldn’t wear it while teaching and while ‘living life’ (outside of school) I wouldn’t get it. The item had to be something that could transition from work to play.
Transitioning clothing from work to play is a lot easier than it seems. I know a lot of women have the mentality that they need to have a separate work wardrobe from their ‘out and about’ wardrobe. That can get expensive. Plus it’s more fun to style and wear clothes in multiple ways.
There are a few key staples that I think are great to have in your closet. They can be worn both to work and for a date night or girl’s night out.
A basic midi skirt is the perfect piece to take from the office to out on the town. Pairing it with a basic top that can be tucked in makes it an easy outfit. Heading out for the night? Swap the top for a graphic tee and add a statement necklace and clutch for a fun look.
A blazer is one of the most versatile transition pieces. Lately, cape blazers have been taking the fashion world by storm. It is a fun twist on the basic blazer and adds a bit of interest to your look. Tossing a blazer (or in this case a cape blazer) on over a dress makes it easy for a day of meetings. Taking your blazer from work to fun is as simple as pairing it with a pair of distressed denim and a graphic tee.
You don’t need to have a full wardrobe set aside just for work in order to be a stylish powerhouse. Take a look at your closet and play around with the pieces you have. I guarantee there is plenty there to mix and match for a work date to date night.
