Are you tired of getting bit every time you gather your family in the backyard for a cookout? Do you find yourself constantly scratching mosquito bite after mosquito bite and wondering if you are wearing a cologne called “beautifully bitten?” Then you also may be asking yourself, “WHY DO I HAVE SO MANY MOSQUITOES”?
Ok, first of all, CALM DOWN! Let’s explore some simple tips to keep the mosquitos away!
1) Remove Water Catching Objects
Mosquitos develop through four stages of growth. They begin as an egg, transition to larva, then pupa and finally they reach the adult stage. In order for the eggs to hatch, they need water. In fact, the larval and pupal stages also need a high moisture or aquatic environment to survive.
Any object capable of holding water for five or more days is a potential breeding site for mosquitoes. Be sure to remove old tires, buckets, tin cans, broken toys and other water catching objects. Consider changing the water in your bird baths by flushing with a hose at least once per week.
Check your rain gutters to make sure water is able to flow freely and remove any debris that can hinder the water flow. It is also beneficial to check your flower pots frequently and drain any excess water.
2) Inspect Pools & Ponds
It is important to keep swimming pools covered when not in use. Pools that are being used should not be an issue because the filtering action should eliminate the mosquitos. Be aware! Small wading pools are prime breeding sites for mosquitos, and this water should be changed frequently. Ponds that contain fish are not a problem because the fish feed on the mosquitos when they are in the larval and pupal stages. A problem may develop from dense vegetation around the pond, because the fish are unable to find the mosquitos.
3) Wear Light Colored Clothing
In order to reduce the number of mosquitos that might come your way, you will want to wear light colored clothing. Mosquitos are actually attracted to dark colors. You can also apply insect repellent to exposed skin and to your clothing.
This can make a big difference! Choosing a product with the active ingredient Deet can provide a few hours of protection while you are enjoying the outdoors. If you are looking for an alternative product, there are also essential oil-based repellents available. The effectiveness of these products may vary, according to what combination of oils are used and how it is applied.
In addition to you taking these measures, you can have a professional pest control provider licensed and experienced in mosquito control treat your property.
