The founder and Executive Artistic Producer of Prima Theatre, Mitch Nugent, began brainstorming six years ago about how Dorothy's story would evolve in the age of digital technology. In this new iteration, Dorothy is fed up with the constant bombardment of digital interfaces, advertising, and superficiality around her. She longs for a more profound and meaningful life, even if it means straying away from the yellow brick road.
This modern production showcases Oz’s beloved characters solely through pop music hits with lyrics that drive the story forward. The production is set to make its debut on the Prima stage in February 2024. This world-premiere production is a unique blend of an immersive pop concert-style theatrical experience that envisions a vibrant life in the digital age. “What a joy it is to share this exciting production with the residents and visitors of Lancaster,” says Nugent.

The team behind the project is notable, with highly sought-after set designer Matthew Herman from California creating an immersive environment beyond Prima's usual sets, requiring collaboration from the professionals at Rock Lititz. Members of Tait's Global Operations team have volunteered their time to transform the theatre into a 4D sensory experience. Cody Smith, known for his work with the Radio City Rockettes team, will direct and choreograph, while Ali Murphy, a former Prima NextGen intern now a star in Nashville, will serve as the Music Director.
The characters are portrayed with fresh takes, requiring talent from across the country. Jarynn Whitney, a performing artist phenom who appeared in two runs of the Broadway hit musical SIX, is set to bring new life to the character of Dorothy.
