This special program of the Encounters with History series will feature Jef Savage and Nancy Walker of Danza Antiqua presenting hands-on history related to personal care packages provided to the U.S. Sanitary Commission for distribution to Union soldiers during the American Civil War.
Experience a practical project for beginners, learn the history of the fiber arts of knitting and crocheting and traditional methods, and view samples of each. Choose either knitting or crocheting to begin making a scarf. The basics of knitting and crocheting will enable participants to continue and complete their project at home after the program. Hear historical interludes covering women’s roles on and off the battlefield, history and activities of the U.S. Sanitary Commission and general knitting and crochet history with an emphasis on Civil War applications.
Reservations are required. Friends of Gettysburg receive member rate. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for this full day of programming. This program is designed for absolute beginners.
