Douglas Tallamy Native Plant Talk
to
St Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church West Market Street, York, Pennsylvania 17401
BRINGING NATURE HOME, a presentation sponsored by the Garden Club of York, the Penn State Extension Master Gardeners, and the York Audubon Society will take place at 7 pm on June 19 at St. Matthew Evangelical Church, 839 West Market St., York, Pa. The speaker is noted author and native plant expert Dr. Doug Tallamy.
Dr Tallamy will discuss the important ecological roles of native plants in our landscapes, including how to plant a better bird feeder, create a butterfly garden, as well as connect our fragmented landscape. Many people understand that we will not save our nation’s biodiversity if we do not increase the amount of native plants in suburban landscapes, but they do not know how to create socially acceptable landscapes using native plants. They are concerned that: native plants are more prone to insect damage; a landscape dominated by natives is messy and wild; dense plantings cannot be attractive; and formal gardens cannot be designed with natives. Dr Tallamy will dispel these misconceptions and suggest ways to make your property a showpiece without losing its ecological function in the local ecosystem.
The 7 pm. Presentation will be preceded by a social hour and displays of local conservation organizations. Tickets will be available at the door and can be ordered by mail by sending $5 per ticket to: An Evening With Doug Tallamy, 112 Pleasant Acres Rd., York, Pa. 17402. Please make checks payable to: PSCE Program Fund. For more information, please call: (717) 428-1320 or email priswald@comcast.net.
