Who has been your biggest influence?
I am inspired by so many women - from my fellow nominees to the legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsberg. But when I think about who influenced my path the most, I would say my mom. She was a pioneer in her field of music therapy helping elderly adults, taught college classes, was active in our church, and the queen of logistics for three busy kids. I learned from watching her that joy and passion can be found equally in creating a career AND a family - you don’t have to choose one or the other.
What motivated you to be involved in your community?
My parents instilled in me early on that giving back and giving of yourself to others was not just encouraged, but expected. I love supporting causes that are important to me and I am honored that the core purpose of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts is supporting The Milton Hershey School. Telling the story of a world class destination that changes the lives of children is truly my dream job.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t doubt that you’re on the right path (and don’t be so hard on yourself along the way!. When you’re just starting your career or a family, there is so much self doubt that you worry you’ll never figure it out. Looking back after being in PR for 15 years and a mom for 7 years, it’s now clear how each fork in the road led me perfectly to where I was meant to be. So you have to trust your gut and do the best you can day by day and suddenly, you have a life that is messy and exhausting sometimes but also so full of love and purpose.
What’s your idea of self care?
It can be so hard to take time to just stop and be present. So I look for little moments and actively plan breaks so I don’t forget completely! Sometimes it’s wine with friends, dinner out with my husband, coffee with a good book, or a massage if I’m really lucky. But most of the time, a walk or game with my kids where we all disconnect from devices is the recharge I need.
What message do you have for the future generations of women?
Never put limits on yourself and what you want to accomplish. The bigger you dream, the less you’ll settle for anything less than your full potential. I also encourage women to build a trusted network of strong women who will help celebrate your wins, lend an ear when you need to vent and encourage you to overcome your fears. I am so blessed to have mentors and incredible teams who helped me grow both personally and professionally.
