Who has been your biggest influence?
Nurse, Florence Nightingale – she influenced medical practice change during a time when men fully dominated the profession, she was a pioneer of infection control, and she was a tool of positive change that saved countless lives.
Maya Angelou – she overcame a difficult beginning to become an insightful educator and civil rights activist. Her words can motivate us to make good life choices. “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou
Grandmother, Ruth was an Irish woman that demonstrated a spirit of strength, resilience and independence. She shared wisdom gained through life experience and offered a fiery persona daily.
What motivated you to be involved in your community?
A desire to inspire, educate and empower individuals to unite to achieve a common goal through teamwork. We each have unique strengths that when mobilized in one direction will influence positive outcomes. Walking with a community is very rewarding.
Willow Valley Communities residents have committed to fight COVID-19 together. Our residents demonstrate a desire to follow recommended prevention to keep the virus out of our community. They hold each other accountable and encourage safe practices on our campus. We unite to give respect to the virus without allowing fear to overwhelm us.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Learn to hear your inner voice and follow your instincts. Establish personal goals and values. Learn your strengths and weaknesses, and then always strive to improve. Stay true to yourself; do not allow the judgment of others to impact your happiness. You have complete control over your response to any situation. Be the woman that inspires others. Lead with integrity. Know the moments when silence is important.
What’s your idea of self-care?
Finding a few minutes each day to be alone with my thoughts. Treating myself to an indulgence once in a while. Rest when my body tells me it is time. Let go of stress when the issue is beyond my control.
What message do you have for the future generations of women?
Identify your goal; you can accomplish that goal one step at a time. The only obstacles in your way are those you permit. Persistence, creativity, and commitment will lead you to a successful life. Believe in your own strength.
