Who has been your biggest influence?
Close friends and women who nurture and support each other like Christine Smith and Kim Kreider Umble. These are women who are great leaders, smart, caring, and willing to roll up their sleeves and get the job done without excuses. They are respectful and command respect but don’t let complacency get in the way of moving a valuable agenda forward.
What motivated you to be involved in your community?
When I saw a need and I felt I had skills, time, or talent to help fill some of that need, I jumped in and did what I could. I believe it our duty to provide time, talent, or money to keep our communities moving as not all causes have the income or volunteer base to meet the demand. If everyone does a little, collectively, we have a greater impact. Being involved in the community not only gives me an opportunity to meet new people, but to feel connected and contribute to its overall vitality.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Forgive yourself and move on. Be okay with making mistakes as none of us are perfect and mistakes make you better in the long run. Take care of yourself and appreciate your youth. Look for opportunities that make you happy – don’t get bogged down with all the what-ifs.
What’s your idea of self-care?
Self-care is allowing yourself to do the things that nurture and replenish you. It could be time with friends, a few hours of quiet with a good book or movie, seeking the advice of a therapist or personal coach, — giving to yourself what you might suggest others should do for themselves. It’s okay to say no to a request and not feel like you have to justify why. You are important too.
What message do you have for the future generations of women?
Appreciate and value the gifts of being a woman. These are assets and not something you should have to work harder to overcome.
