The Salvation Army has being doing exactly what its name suggests, giving salvation to millions of people throughout the country and even in our own backyard. Volunteers for The Salvation Army have dedicated countless hours to improving the lives of people young and old in the Harrisburg area since 1885. The Salvation Army Harrisburg Capital City Region offers 11 different programs that benefitted 22,844 children and adults last year. For example, Salvation Army thrift stores can be visited throughout the area, and the proceeds raised from stores are directly used to support The Salvation Army’s Adult Rehab Center, a 103-bed facility on Vartan Way in Harrisburg. The Army has many opportunities for people to get involved including the third annual Shoe Strut on Sept. 12, which helps provide new shoes for disadvantaged children who need them. This fun event, which is a fabulous occasion to show off your favorite stilettos, has garnered over $50,000 in income to support Salvation Army programs and provided 500 new pairs of shoes. Volunteers for the event estimate 400 guests will be in attendance this year, and even more shoes are predicted to be given. - A.G.

Rich History
With three generations of expertise, manufacturing chocolates has been and still is the livelihood of the Macris family. Brothers Jim, Louis, Steve and John originally founded Philadelphia Candies in 1919. In 2013, John Macris' granddaughter Elena moved to the Harrisburg area and opened a third sister store, Macris Chocolates, located in Lemoyne’s West Shore Plaza. The chocolates are all made from scratch and created using the freshest ingredients. Almost as fabulous as the chocolate, the décor of the Macris Chocolates store is definitely worth the visit. The friendly atmosphere and sweet aroma is bound to make you feel at home. With over 100 delicious varieties of chocolates including peanut butter truffles, sea salt caramels and orange peel, Macris has treats, hostess gifts and favors for just about any occasion. Their signature piece is the croquette, a made-from-scratch buttercream center hand dipped in milk chocolate and covered in freshly roasted peanuts. Visit Macris Chocolates and let Macris be a tradition in your family. - B.B.
