THE THEME: Bygone elegance, incorporating architecture of the Historic York United States Post Office, owned by a friend of the bride’s dad. Pillows turned mailbox alcoves into lounge seating. Translucent drapes hung from columns gracefully divided the sorting room into ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception areas.
THE MEANT-TO-BE: Micahlyn Scarborough, known as Micah, greeted guests at a church ministry for twenty-somethings. Michael Riggs was home on leave. She liked his haircut. He needed a new one, and she’s a hairstylist. A few days after his salon appointment, he sent her a song, “Overwhelmed,” by Tim McMorris, that speaks of love at first sight and marriage. “Overwhelmed” was their wedding dance.
THE CEREMONY: It was the heart of the day, performed by a family friend who also conducted pre-marital counseling via Skype while Michael was stationed in Afghanistan. Michael and Micah wanted a fun reception, but they particularly wanted a ceremony anchored in their faith in God and Jesus, the foundation of the relationship. Guests were visibly moved.
THE FIND: For a pop of fun, they opted for a sprinkle cake and a non-traditional topper. Shopping at Target the day before the wedding, Micah found the topper: a Ken and a brunette Barbie doll, dressed for the beach. Perfect, because everyone compares the couple to Ken and Barbie, even though she’s a brunette, because they would be living at Topsail Island, N.C., for the first six months of their marriage.
THE HITCH: Cake-cutting time. Everyone was watching. Micah realized that she forgot a knife. Time to improvise. She snagged cake-topper Ken and cut the cake with his arm.
THE FAVORS: A two-parter. Bags of personalized M&M’s, because Michael’s dad calls the couple M&M. And a donation in honor of the guests to the Wounded Warrior Project.
