In my two years as a parent, I’ve learned that Halloween is pretty much the bane of an uncreative mom’s existence. Somehow, between all the trunk-or-treats, parades and various parties, Halloween has morphed into a two-week holiday that, much like the Oscars or a Kardashian wedding, requires multiple costume changes. Add Facebook and Instagram into the mix and pretty much the whole month of October puts my domestic inadequacies in the spotlight.
At this point, I’d say I’m batting 1-2 when it comes to Halloween costumes for Holden. For her first Halloween, I cobbled together a kinda-cute Money Bag costume from Pinterest.

Black felt
Double-sided tape
Baby headband
Basically it got the job done and she looked adorable. She hated the headband and the stupid paper money kept falling out, but you take the good with the bad.
Last year, I was in the early stages of pregnancy with Gatsby and wasn’t feeling the whole DIY Halloween thing at all, so I went the cheap and lazy route and just picked up some costumes at the consignment shop. I think she seriously had like four different costumes by the time November 1 came around.
I did, however, learn the all-important lesson for moms of baby girls: adding a tutu to anything can make it a costume.
This year, I think I’ve found my zone and the formula to perfecting all future Halloweens: Etsy.
My motto in everything I do, professional and personal, is “fake it ‘til you make it,” and Etsy has become like my personal assistant. I get a cute costume that is handmade… just not by me.
I figure this is my last year to choose Holden’s Halloween costume for her so I wanted to make it a good one. A League of Their Own is one of my top movies and Holden is a super athletic two-year-old so I’m pretty psyched by this Etsy find.
I think Holden’s a bit more Mae Mordabito than Dottie Henson, but time will tell, I suppose. The Rockford Peach costume comes from Silver Threads by Ronda on Etsy.
I’m planning on finding a little baseball player pajama set for Gatsby (see, cheap & easy) and for myself, I’ll be taking a page out of the Beyonce playbook.

Happy Halloween, y’all.
