Gibson
We asked; you voted. After hundreds of Facebook entries featuring pics of cute pets, this was our readers’ pick. And what a deserving doggie.
The owners of Gibson lost their first Brittany, Jack Bones, in late 2016. Anyone who has loved and lost a pet knows it is like losing a best friend. The void left in their home after Jack passed was huge. Little did they know, Gibson was born the week before Jack died, and they believe he was sent to help heal their pain. Gibson joined the family in December 2016 and has brought so much laughter, love and energy to their home. He has a huge personality and loves playing fetch, running through the creek and snuggling. The family looks forward to all the new adventures to share with him.
Of course, our staff had some opinions too, as equal opportunity purveyors of cuteness.
STAFF PICK: Leonard is an 11-year-old Shetland Pony. He lives with his friend Sheldon, who is a miniature donkey. Leonard likes visiting kids’ birthday parties and day camps, but he also enjoys participating in shows and lessons. He loves dandelions, carrots, apples and hay. One of his favorite things to do is sunbathe.
STAFF PICK: Molly is a 9-year-old miniature dachshund from Bainbridge, PA. She has a younger sister (also a miniature dachshund), Pistachio. She loves to take walks and look out the window, and she will do almost anything for a treat. Her most famous trick is playing dead. She loves going on car rides, especially when they end in visiting Grandma or going to the pet store.
STAFF PICK: Zelda Katherine Henry is an eight-year-old seal point Himalayan. She was adopted two years ago from the York SPCA. The owners were still recovering from the loss of their previous cat, but the SPCA staff kept telling them to look at the Himalayan. When they looked in the cage, they saw this super grumpy face staring back, and they fell in love with those big blue eyes. Zelda loves to lay in the sun and watch birds. She is very smart and knows several tricks; however, getting her to do them on command can be quite a challenge. But she does give lots of kisses with her rough tongue.
Staff pets
The Susquehanna Style staff loves pets. We have a mix of cat- and dog-people, but there’s one thing we have in common—adoration of animals. Meet our furry friends.
This is our two-year-old Parti Labradoodle, Pepper. She likes Netflix, birdwatching and homemade banana yogurt. She’s got her own Instagram too, @pepperthepartigirl.
–Emily Freiert, intern
Our almost-nine-year-old dachshund/beagle mix is named The Josephine (or Joei, for short) because she is a one-of-a-kind heart-stealer. We couldn’t imagine life without her.
–Rick Cochran, associate publisher
Nimbus is my 10-month-old seal mink Ragdoll. She is the definition of a “puppy cat” and follows me from room to room. And she would rather sit on a lap than eat her own dinner.
–Monica Shell, graphic designer
Meet Miss Dixie Sugarbarker. She’s a smilin’ gal because she got rescued from Mississippi, and we adopted her at the Lancaster SPCA. She’s a Bluetick Coonhound and is as sweet as can be.
–Keely Childers Heany, editor-in-chief
Genghis Khat is my favorite fur baby. I rescued him 9 years ago and he has become the love of my life. He is always by my side. He’s also a polydactyl cat with extra toes on his front paws!

This is Izzy, who I inherited in April of 2016. Izzy was believed to be a female cat, but upon examination for a medical issue, Izzy suddenly became a male cat. Life is full of surprises!

We brought Chester, our Airedale Terrier puppy, home in mid-April and plan on spoiling him to the fullest extent. When fully grown, he will be almost 100 pounds and over 2 feet tall!
