We all know that trends never die out completely, especially in beauty and fashion. But what about trends from the 18th century? Celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Joni Mitchell have begun replicating the gravelly gray locks of Marie Antoinette and fellow 18th century socialites, who powdered their ringlets to snowy hues. Now women are finding inspiration in more relaxed styles like tousled waves and choppy pixies. Stylist Betsy Valentin at Luxe in Lancaster believes this fad will phase out eventually, but for the moment, it is very popular among younger and older women (www.luxelancaster.com). Ladies in their 20s and 30s typically ask for platinum or lilac-toned silvers, while those graying naturally let their roots decide the shade.
Achieving a silver dye begins with bleaching the hair to yellow white, Valentin explains, and the stylist will then gradually add gray. For many women, this process may take several weeks or months. For Valentin’s client, Daniel Almonta, it has taken nearly seven months. Daniel visits Luxe every two weeks for toner because maintaining the hair’s integrity is vital, says Valentin. Having previously sported a choppy, hot pink cut, Daniel now wears extensions, blending them with her natural strands by straightening the hair or curling it into loose waves.
To complete the look, Daniel contours her face using highlighter and bronzer, and pairs this with heavier eye makeup. Valentin explains that a silver mane should be complemented with equally styled hair and clothes, in order to not appear undone. She and Daniel would advise women considering this high-maintenance look to be prepared for the time and financial commitment.
On the other hand, women allowing their hair to take nature’s path is “as easy as it gets,” Valentin says. Such is the case for Amy Herwig, who quit a 20-year hair coloring routine when salon visits would not fit into her busy schedule. And she could not be happier. Herwig says her hair is softer, healthier and marbled with natural highlights, like a subtle white streak framing her face.

She receives countless compliments from women who tell her, “if I knew my hair would grow out to be that pretty, I would do it.” While Amy understands the fear factor, she recommends that ladies embrace the gray.
To avoid a washed out complexion, she chooses bright colors, bold jewelry and makeup that highlights her eyes. Loving her accidental style, Amy claims she will never dye her hair again.
