I have to say January is not one of my favorite months. We’re past the holidays and fun parties and now it just seems cold. It’s now that I really start counting the days until spring: March 1 is my countdown date.
Because I’m always cold, layers are more important than ever to beat the deep winter chill. And, coats are the perfect layer ending at this time of year. They are just as important as the rest of your outfit. A striking coat can add the right pop to anything you are wearing.
I’m loving the faux fur trend which is everywhere this year. You can find great faux fur coats at local vintage shops (one of my favorites is Hinesite). I have a beautiful leopard print coat from here that adds a perfect punch to any outfit. And, don’t be afraid of leopard…it’s a print that never goes out of style and really works in your wardrobe as a neutral. But, one of the coats I am obsessed with is this one from Shrimps. The one below is my favorite (and, their website is just plain fun so check it out). It’s a total splurge but it would be just so much fun to wear!
Color blocking has carried over to coats this year as well. It’s a trend that has been around for a few years, so don’t be afraid to try it out. I had fun at Taupe testing out this trend with a beautiful black and white coat.
The puffer style coats are also still popular. Try one in a different color, for example, this beautiful orange version! Look for this type of coat with belts and faux fur to add a little more style. Both of these coats from Taupe feature fur accents combining two trends in one. The gray version has a great faux fur lining to keep you nice and warm.
Ponchos and capes add drama to any outfit. If you’re not sure how to wear these, try pairing them with skinny jeans and slip-on sneakers or flats to keep the outfit simple. You can find these in prints or solids. I add a pair of cashmere arm warmers over my sweaters to give me extra warmth.
Pastels are a really big trend this year and can add a soft bit of color to your January outings. Many different styles of coats are available in pastels, especially pink and light blue. Add navy or denim and camel to give some contrast to the softer colors. And, one last coat to keep an eye out for is the shearling style. The one below is nicely fitted and neutral colors so it will last you for years. Add a brightly colored scarf and you’re ready to go!
Get out and kick off 2015 with one of these stunning coats! Enjoy…
