As a lover of all things downtown York, every month is “Best of York” month for me and my family. I’m always more than happy to share the good word about my town, so here are some great family friendly things going on this month in our city.
Central Market Saturdays
Standing at North Beaver and Philadelphia Streets for more than 125 years, Central Market, or “Market” as it’s affectionately known, is both a reminder of York’s storied history and a Saturday morning staple for many York families. We love “Market Days” and stopping in to grab a cup of coffee, a huge sticky Paris Bun from Copper Crust or breakfast from Mezzogiorno (who made the pancakes for Holdy’s Princess Pancake Birthday Party that we held at Market in June).
Often on Saturdays, you’ll also find fun kids cooking and craft demos at the YorKitchen demo kitchen inside Market. On Saturday, August 12, bring your kiddos to make homemade playdough! Check the full YorKitchen events calendar here.
First Fridays
First Friday is a celebration of downtown shops, restaurants, cultural venues, and nightlife hotspots. From 5-9 p.m., downtown shops and restaurants host special events, offer refreshments and promotions, and sponsor live entertainment. August’s First Friday theme is on Friday, August 7 and the theme is “Sidewalk Sale.” www.downtownyorkpa.com/firstfridays
Second Saturdays in the City
Head to downtown York the second Saturday of each month through September for “Second Saturdays.” A free, family friendly event from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., where you’ll enjoy live performances, hands-on activities, and entertainment throughout York City with the following themes:
-
August 8: Move Your Body!
-
September 12: Let's Make Music!
There will be arts-themed activities, kids’ crafts, live music, and in-store promotions all over the entire downtown. Visit www.2ndsaturdayyork.org for details.
PRIME Art Supply
Located at 128 E. King St. in the Royal Square Neighborhood, PRIME always has great kids’ art camps and events, like tie dye days, outdoor art adventures … and even events for parents, like Coloring and Cocktails night. See all the events on their Facebook page.
Frozen Fun at Central Market
Central Market is getting Frozen on First Friday, September 4 with an Anna and Elsa appearance. The following day, Saturday, September 5, the Market will host a Frozen Tea Party with The Enchanted Teapot as part of York City Boutique Week. Stay tuned to their Facebook Page for details: www.facebook.com/CentralMarketYork.
foodstruck
On Sunday, September 6 from 11 a.m.- 6 p.m., head to Penn Park (100 W. College Ave.) for Central PA’s largest free-admission food truck party. Featuring food trucks, merchants, live music, a beer garden, and family fun, including four play structures, in four square blocks of green space in the heart of York City. www.foodstruckyork.com
I hope you have fun enjoying the White Rose City as much as we do. Post your adventures on social media with the hashtag #iloveyorkcity and check out my Instagram to keep up with the Oh Bother kids online!
