You know your dinner is fresh when the chef strolls to Farmers on the Square market for that night’s ingredients. A tax uprising inspired the rustic décor and 100 whiskey offerings to pair with your wagyu steak, chicken pot pie, or Rebellion’s Reuben with house candied corned beef and local Swiss cheese.

FOR THE HISTORY BUFFS
Carlisle’s Army heritage is baked into its streets. Carlisle Barracks dates to 1757, when soldiers at a British outpost guarded against Native Americans fighting to regain their land. The U.S. Army War College came along in 1901 to explore lessons learned from the Spanish-American War.
George Washington founded the Carlisle Iron Works, where muskets and cannons forged from the region’s abundant iron ore helped the Continental Army win a revolution. In 1794, Washington stopped in Carlisle before marching west to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion–the only time a sitting U.S. president led troops into the field.
Historic Carlisle, Inc.’s walking tour brings visitors face to face with Cumberland County Courthouse pillars chipped by Confederate shells in 1863, the hotel where Frederick Douglass stayed in 1872, and the alley where rioting townspeople gave refugee slaves the cover needed to slip away from their former owner.
ARMY HERITAGE TRAIL
Three hundred years of America’s military heritage wind along one mile of trail. From a French and Indian War waystation to a Civil War cannon, and from a World War I trench to Vietnam-era “Huey” helicopter, artifacts and interactive exhibits spotlight the hardships endured and sacrifices made by generations of American soldiers.
