Claire Vaye Watkins and Derek Palacio are co-directors of the Mojave School, a free creative writing workshop for teenagers in rural Nevada.
A Guggenheim Fellow, Watkins is an assistant professor in the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan. One of the National Book Foundation’s “5 Under 35,” she is the author of Battleborn, which won a silver PEN Award from the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame. Her debut novel, Gold Fame Citrus, has been named a Best Book of the Year by major publications including The Atlantic and The Washington Post.
Palacio is a faculty member for the Institute of American Indian Arts’ Master of Fine Arts Program. His short story “Sugarcane” appeared in The O. Henry Prize Stories 2013, and his novella, How to Shake the Other Man, was published by Nouvella Books. His debut novel, The Mortifications (Tim Duggan Books), was listed as one of the 100 Notable Books of 2016 by The New York Times.
