Learn a variety of methods for oil painting based on specific historical models of master painters. Using contemporary materials, these methods will serve to explore the complexities and versatility of the materials for oil painting in an attempt to expand their possibilities. Students will complete three paintings during the course; two master copies and a studio painting of their own design. The master copies will be completed step by step, using the artist’s historical method (one indirect painting and one direct painting selected from a list provided by the instructor). The studio painting will serve to explore the historical methods from a contemporary viewpoint. This will provide an opportunity to consider the variety of painting supports such as canvas, panels, and paper, as well as, explain specific technical properties of oil paint, mediums, and supports. Note: Basic painting and drawing skills are required but all skill levels are welcome. Additional studio time may be necessary to complete course work.
