Market Square Concerts presents Amernet String Quartet

On Saturday, April 25, at 8 pm, Market Square Concerts will present the Amernet String Quartet, winner of both Tokyo and Banff international string quartet competitions, in a special program commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of WW II focusing on Jewish voices in music. The repertoire will include Mendelssohn’s tragic final string quartet Op. 80, written in response to the loss of his sister; Five Pieces for String Quartet by Erwin Schulhoff, who perished in the Wülzburg concentration camp in 1942; String Quartet No. 4 by Shostakovich, written in 1949 during Stalin’s final campaign against Jewish cultural leaders; and String Quartet No. 5 (1945) by Mieczyslaw Weinberg, one of the most underrated great composers of the Soviet era.
