Who has been your biggest influence?
I’m always inspired by stories of people who overcome trauma and struggle to make something great of themselves. I’ve been seeking out these stories since I was a kid, and continue to read and be influenced by them.
What motivated you to be involved in your community?
Barbers exist at the hubs of our communities, right in the center of everything. We are connectors. We help people find each other and we bridge gaps between different groups of people. When I realized this, I knew I had to take my role seriously. My goal is to elevate my community by living well and showing up every day for myself and for the people in it.
What advice would you give your younger self?
You don’t have to know what you want to do with the rest of your career before you take action. Pursue your interests, and they will lead you to opportunities. Also, finish what you start!
What’s your idea of self care?
For me self-care is obviously anything I can do to keep myself physically healthy, such as going to bed on time, packing a healthy lunch, stretching and exercising, but it’s also keeping myself mentally healthy. I feed my mind with books, audio books, good conversation, and movies. I do kind things for others whenever I have the opportunity, and I make sure I always have a creative outlet. Right now my outlet stand up comedy!
What message do you have for the future generations of women?
We women are raised to always be “nice,” but you don’t have to be nice to be kind. Get good at saying no. It will give you power and earn you respect!
