Maddie + Austin

It’s commonly heard that food is a universal language, with the unique ability to bring people together. This mantra couldn’t be more true for Maddie and Austin Kuhn. The newlyweds met working in the restaurant industry; Maddie as a server and Austin as a chef. Evidently, food is a huge part of their lives, and Maddie says it was important this shared passion shined through on their special day.
“We still work together and love food, so when it came to our wedding, we wanted to highlight that, naturally!” she says.\
An Asian and Italian inspired dinner station, a gelato cart, personal pizzas and a wide variety of other eclectic options ensured that the food certainly did shine, and stand out.
“Our caterer worked with us on custom menus and food stations,” Maddie says. “We took that food inspiration into our decor, of course.”
Rather than numbering each table, as is done traditionally, Maddie and Austin opted for a fruit or vegetable centerpiece for each table, so guests were assigned to “corn” or “onion” or “cucumber.” Additionally, the seating chart assignments were on charcuterie boards displayed at cocktail hour.
“It was so fun for our guests to see each variation of centerpiece as they found their table, and it literally be the center of conversation,” Maddie says.
Another highlight of the occasion: their cake. A three-layer tower of ivory frosting, perfectly placed orange slices and delicate leaves made their cake (from JK Simply Cake) truly memorable.
Aside from food, Maddie says nature and the couple’s dogs are also extremely significant in their lives, and they wanted this to be reflected in their wedding as well. They had originally toyed with the idea of having their wedding at Austin’s family cabin in Tioga County. However, one of their dogs, Buddha, was diagnosed with cancer, so they needed to accelerate the wedding plans to ensure Buddha could be present.
“We took a lot of time finding the right caterer who would knock the food out of the park and get creative with that. We also focused on incorporating the pups into the day and having such a beautiful and scenic ceremony.”
Their love for nature was expressed through their venue choice—The Mill at Manor Falls— with a waterfall in the background of where they exchanged their I Do’s.
“They have a hidden waterfall down a beautiful nature trail there,” she says. “That was so idyllic.”
The celebration went late into the evening and consisted of delicious food, stunning views, dancing and most importantly, cherishing the time spent with all of their family and friends in one place.
Maddie says guests were sent home with something special: a spice blend created by Maddie and Austin, along with a mini bottle of hot sauce. These are [two items...] they both love and frequently use in the kitchen, reflecting who they are as a couple and adding even more flavor, creativity—and a bit of spice—into their day.
Looking back, Maddie says the wedding was a “beautiful and scenic” celebration of what matters the most to them: their love for food, their love for each other and the joy of being surrounded by family, friends and their beloved dogs. The day was a dream come true, that—just like food—had the unique ability to bring everybody together.
