So you just went out and purchased the perfect outfit. It goes without saying that without the right finishing touches, that impeccable outfit can become a perfect mess. For example, if you are going to a formal event, your black dress might garner the wrong kind of attention if paired with athletic shoes shoes. My point is, the same principle applies to interior design.
Time and time again, my clients will approve my recommendations for the basic furniture layout, wall color, seating pieces and fabrics. Sounds like a perfect room – right? Not so fast. Yes, these basic elements are important in a rooms design. But it is the finish touches that take a room from drab to fab.
Artwork is one of the most important and impactful elements in a space. It is the final layer, or jewelry, of the outfit and its placement is critical to a room’s success.
Art is a very personal thing. More times than not, my clients have existing artwork, either collected or inherited, valuable or simply sentimental, that they want to see used in their room. This gives me the opportunity to interject their individuality and put their personal stamp on the space.
When it comes to hanging art, just be mindful that there are some simple steps that should be considered. Here are basic, easy to follow, tips for introducing art the right way.
-
Don’t reach for the sky
Simply put, as a general rule, art should be installed at eye level, or lower. Think of your art as a layer, something that ties the furniture and walls together, not a singular item floating in space.
-
Tuck it in
A piece of art with a corner gently covered by a lamp shade or an oversized vase creates a layer that draws the eye and creates more visual interest.
