Mock me if you want, but I love hot dogs. It’s not because I have poor taste when it comes to food, I swear. I even consider myself to be somewhat of a foodie. Still, when it comes to cookout options, I’ll always go for the dog. Oh, I have my reasons…burgers are too bulky; chicken can get dry on the grill; but I can never go wrong with a frank.
There are a couple secrets to hot dog success. First, opt for the high-quality versions. I love the natural kind: nitrite free, uncured, and most importantly, all beef. Second, go big or go home when it comes to toppings. Sure, mustard and onions will cut it at the ballpark, but for a real gourmet treat, try one of these topping combinations:
The Pico Dog: top with pico de gallo, avocado, and jalapeno slices
The Banh Mi Dog: top with cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno slices, hoisin, and mayo/sriracha mixture
The Reuben Dog: top with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing
