Picking out an outfit for a photo shoot can be challenging. Especially when it’s up to you to dress your entire family…and yourself.
Here are 10 easy tips for choosing outfits that will look great on camera and go together perfectly…
1. PINTEREST
Start with brainstorming. Pinterest can help with inspiration on background ideas, location settings, outfits and even poses!

2. LOCATION & BACKGROUND
Pick a location and background to have your photos taken. What you wear should fairly go with your setting.
EXAMPLE 1: for a snowy background wear snow boots, jacket, scarf and a hat. EXAMPLE 2: for a red background skip the red dress. The red tones may clash.

3. Color
Stick with two to three complementary colors, and balance the colors out between family members. EXAMPLE: if you’re using red, don’t have everyone wear a red shirt.

4. TEXTURES & PATTERNS
Family photos are more interesting with a variety of color, textures (tweed, sequins, tulle) and patterns (plaid, polka dots, floral).
EXAMPLE: have one or two people wear jeans, and others either a dress/skirt, or different color pants.

5. CLASSICS
Since your photo will be hanging in your home for years to come, select classic and simple pieces for a timeless look. Wearing trendy pieces can give your photo an outdated look once the trend is over.
6. ACCESSORIZE
Make your photo pop with necklaces, scarves, fun shoes and socks. It’s the perfect time to add your pops of color to synch everyone together.
7. TAKE A PHOTO
Lay out the outfits on the floor to get a better idea of how the textures and colors will look next to each other. Then take a pic! It’ll also help with where to position each person.
8. DON’TS
- Logos or words on shirts/pants. It’s distracting in a photo. - Too matchy and wearing the same outfit. - Too many patterns and stripes. Not everyone should wear a pattern. - Sneakers.

9. PRIMP
Remember to primp before your photo shoot.
