Athletes train their bodies into well-oiled machines with the help of personal trainers, coaches, and experts. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to train like a professional athlete? Even if we did, we might not need to be able to throw a baseball at 90 miles-per-hour like Tanner Roark of the Washington Nationals. Athletes have spent years building to optimal and peak performance. They gain more than just fitness benefits when they hit the gym, there is scientific research that suggests lifting weights and resistance training can benefit your mind, as well as your physical health. All around, moving your body and mindfully choosing what foods fuel your body is a lifestyle that you can benefit from regardless of your profession. You can train with the same personal trainer as Tanner Roark, Chase Edmonds, Aaron Berry, and other professional athletes right here in Central PA.
Nestled right beside Arooga’s on Route 22 is The Performance Lab Fitness of Harrisburg. The brainchild of owner Ryan Mackes, this facility is bursting with people all day long working on their fitness–from youth athletes to professional athletes and anyone wanting to push themselves. Mackes creates tailor-made programs to match any fitness level. He has clients from the age of 8 to 82 and he isn’t stopping anytime soon.
“I want to change the way working out and training is done in this area,” Mackes says.
When you come to work out at The Lab with Mackes you can expect to be pushed and challenged. Mackes no newbie in the field. He has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Shippensburg University, is an ISSA-certificated strength and conditioning coach, has a sports nutrition certification, and more. He emphasizes food, “[Nutrition] is 85% of the battle.” Mackes’ training style is to use body weight and free weights; you won’t find a facility full of machines at The Lab.
Mackes’ personal training business has become synonymous with some of the professional athletes that trusted him early on. When you step into his facility, you are surrounded by framed jerseys covering the walls with notes of gratitude. If you need some inspiration just take a look around at the hometown names on the wall, among them Aaron Berry and Danny Lansanah.
As Mackes’ looks forward to more growth and changing the industry, next up for The Lab is a bigger facility with additional training staff. Mackes’ only guarantee is that if you come train with him you are going to work. Whether you are the everyday athlete participating in recreational sports or the parent of a youth athlete looking to make a collegiate team with a scholarship, training like a pro could be just the needed push.
