Anyone who knows me well knows I can never have enough shoes. My motto: Life is short. Buy the shoes. And, bundled into that motto is boots…at the top of the list probably. Since I seem to be cold all year ‘round (unless I’m in the Vegas desert!), boots never rotate out of my wardrobe. But, as it gets cooler at night moving into fall, I bring out the higher boots so I can still sport a mini and not be shivering.
This fall will be no exception. There are a number of styles on my must-have list that I need to find room for in my closet. You may think it’s not easy finding shoes or boots locally, but if you’re willing to explore a bit, you can be right on-trend.
Booties/ankle boots as well as traditional knee-high or over-the-knee boots are all great choices for this fall. If you’re looking for a style to still lengthen your leg but be a little more comfortable, check out the new wedge styles. They have a little slimmer heel, great colors and a more ladylike look that will pair nicely with this season’s midiskirt. They also can transition easily from day to night so you can get a lot of use out of a pair. If you add a cool pair of knee-high socks and a skirt you have a great look for running errands on the weekend while still being comfortable and stylish.
Lace-up styles are also big this year and vary in heel from low and chunky to stilettos. Add in a combination of buckles, texture and color and the possibilities are endless! For early fall, put a pair of ankle socks with these. The lug sole (or for those of us who remember the original combat boots…) is also a great pick for this year, especially if we have a winter like last year. I love this style of boot for market shopping on Saturdays or walks around town. I pair mine with a flirty skirt and tights to soften them up and add an unexpected twist. You could also wear them with longer, full-length skirts for a more boho look.
One of my favorites is the over-the-knee style (again, I’m always cold!). Personally, I love these in a flat style because I think they are more versatile. I am lusting after a pair of Stuart Weitzman 50/50 in blue suede. These are salty and I consider more of an investment piece but trust me, you will wear them all the time once you have them. You can easily wear these with this season’s miniskirts (I pair with similar colored tights for a streamlined appearance) or a longer skirt and then no tights required. If you go for a heel style, keep it a thick stacked heel to be work appropriate. Keep the thin heels for a night out in this style.
The Chelsea bootie is a big trend this year as well for a retro/mod look. Add snakeskin, cutouts or wingtip-inspired embossing and you will be right on-point.
Equestrian style boots are a good staple and can take you from casual to dressy.
Western style boots and booties are also seeing a comeback this year. You can opt for a traditional style or go a little fancier by picking a pair with buckles, fringe, textures or studs. These boots are also stepping up in rich leather and suede. Keep it looking trendy and not “cowgirl” by not adding any other cowgirl-inspired accents. So, no chambray shirts or big belts ladies; a flirty flowered skirt or skinny jeans will be the picks for this year.
Don’t forget about checking out our local consignment and vintage shops for these styles as well. Trust me, you will find great steals here and keep your budget intact! Try these:
