1. Grab Some Green
This year home décor and design will take its cues from nature. Greenery, Pantone’s named Color of the Year, pairs well with other hues found outdoors—think dreamy sky blue, sand, mushroom or tonal shades like kalamata olive. Designer Sandra Steiner-Houck confirms, “the innovative use of timeless, natural materials [like] stone, wood, glass and metals” will be big this year.
2. Granny Glam
Fiber arts like embroidery and cross-stitch are making a comeback, but not in the literal sense of your grandma’s style. Today’s embroidery weaves through paintings or plays with current colors while cross-stitch patterns are bigger, bolder and wittier. Give Pinterest a search for cross-stitch if you’re curious.
3. The Heavy on Metals
Gold continues to grow in popularity, which we’re seeing everywhere from cabinet pulls and knobs to shelving, lamps and accessories. But not to worry if you’ve got other metallics in place already. Designers like Steiner-Houck confirm “mixing of metal finishes” is in vogue. And she advises not to forget gold and brass plumbing fixtures and accessories for baths to create the most up-to-date look. And don’t forget the “bling” in furnishings, fabrics and accessories, says Steiner-Houck.
4. Longing for the Past
Midcentury modern furniture, colors and patterns will continue to grow in popularity according to interior designers Amy Kleinfelter and Angelique Miller of Tono Architects and Amy Brunner of Interiors by Deco.
5. Mad for Mattes
Matte looks aren’t just for lips. Following a trend away from glossy, shiny surfaces to more matte surfaces, European-inspired ceramic tile is starting to gain popularity in backsplashes, fireplace surrounds, bathrooms, accent walls and flooring. Cement tile offers another matte option for minimalistic style. The experts at Tono Architects agree: mattes are trending in accents and lighting too.
6. Living Well Balanced
In an age where we’re always plugged in, the architects and designers at Tono Architects are seeing serenity in common-area, tech-free living spaces like bedrooms and living rooms. They also note a continued trend of restful, inviting bathrooms and a focus on relaxing elements like statement fireplaces. “We have seen at least the conversation about making houses more accessible for long term living increase,” says Kyle Solyak of Tono Architects. Steiner-Houck says she’s hoping to achieve “classic and modern designs with a well balanced atmosphere” for her clients this year.
7. Gathered at the Table
We reported on formal dining rooms making a comeback last spring, and experts confirm they are continuing to rise. Steiner-Houck notes an increase in “open plan designs for more comfortable living and entertaining.” Solyak agrees, “There seems to be an emphasis on planning for entertaining guests.” Kitchens with taller cabinets and open plans are another trend Steiner-Houck notes.
