Everyone wants to put her best face forward at work. Like at many businesses around the region, the Susquehanna Style staff is as varied in personality as it is in age. We teamed up with makeup artist Maggie King and hair stylists Whitney Burkhart and Missie Lewis of Luxe to get some advice on beauty that fits the concerns and routines of our diverse team. Read along to find some tips that you can use, too.

Maggie’s makeup solution: Bold brows and lips
Tips to get this look:
• Remember to apply eye makeup before under-eye makeup. “I do the eyes first because I don’t want any fallout on the rest of the face,” says King.
• For a clean eye that stays all day, start with an ultra-thin marker liner and go over the line again with gel liner.
• Use an angled brush to fill brows with powder, then set with gel to help them keep their shape.
• Opt for a contoured face to play up natural angles. To do this, use darker creams to emphasize the naturally darker areas of the face (the hollows of the cheeks, around the jaw) and lighter creams to emphasize the brighter areas (under the eye, forehead).
• Line lips with a rose pencil to create definition, then fill them with cream lipcolor in the same shade for a fully matte face.
Missie’s hair solution: A textured pixie with volume Tips to get this look: • Spray Bumble and bumble Prep throughout damp hair to give all-over grit and texture.
• Blow dry hair at root. Don’t worry about perfection…be messy. “Just make sure you are moving hair away from where it lives to create volume,” says Lewis.
• Flat iron only the top layer of the hair. “This gives the visual that the whole look is ironed,” Lewis explains.
• When you have wispy sections of hair around your face, flip one side out and flip the other side in. This way, it’s not the focus of the whole look. To keep them in place, spritz hairspray on your fingers before you style the pieces.
• Give your style staying power with an all-over, firm-hold product like Bumble and bumble Classic Hairspray.
Katie Walmer
Art Director
The design mind behind the pages of Susquehanna Style, Katie is an easygoing girl. “I like to wear makeup, but I don’t want it to be complicated,” Katie explains. Like many in their twenties, her concerns include skin that starts dry but gets oilier throughout the day.
Maggie’s makeup solution: A fresh face with dramatic winged eyes
Tips to get this look:
• Start with an oil-control moisturizer to help your makeup last through the day. King recommends Mario Badescu Control Moisturizer for Oily Skin.
• Apply BB Cream with a dampened beautyblender to give a flawless finish without looking too heavy. Use concealer that is two shades lighter to give brightness to the under-eye area.
• Apply translucent powder under eyes to “bake” makeup and keep it from creasing throughout the day. For a perfect winged eye, try a super-fine-tip marker liner. “It’s the calligraphy pen for the eyes,” King says.
• Use clear tape to get the perfect angle for your wing.
Whitney’s hair solution: Beachy, wavy hair
Tips to get this look:
• Dust Bumble and bumble Pret-a-Powder all over dry, second-day hair (as in washed the day prior) to give volume and minimize oil.
• Using a flat iron on one-inch sections of hair, starting two inches from the scalp, grasp hair and flip the iron once. Slide iron down the shaft of hair in that position to create a loose wave.
• Alternate the direction of your waves throughout your hair, but remember to keep face-framing sections flowing away from the face.
• To finish with full texture, flip hair upside down and spray with Bumble and bumble Dryspun Finish.

Keely Childers Heany
Editor in Chief and Associate Publisher
Overseeing the magazine keeps Keely moving in the office and all around the region. Busy days, coupled with parenting a toddler, make quick and easy hair and makeup a must. Minimal makeup is her preference, with just a swipe of mascara most days, “but I like to play up my eyes for evening events,” she says.
Maggie’s makeup solution: A gold and glowing face
Tips to get this look:
• Don’t be afraid to mix products. King wanted light all-over coverage for Keely’s foundation, so she mixed heavier and lighter foundations to create a BB Cream texture.
• Shimmering shades of peach eye shadow create a warm base for golden eye makeup.
• To create a soft smoky eye, start with an ultra-thin marker liner, then use a flat-tipped brush to smudge the line. After smoking the eye out with a bronze shadow, reline with dark black eyeliner to regain definition.
• Bronzer should be applied where the sun naturally hits, on your cheeks and forehead.
• Coral and orange shades of lip color complement gold and bronze tones perfectly.
Whitney’s hair solution: Casual glamour curls
Tips to get this look:
• For maximum volume for long hair, spray hair with Bumble and bumble Prep before blow-drying hair with a large round brush and a nozzle.
• You don’t need a fancy tool to get glam. Once dry, use a traditional one-inch barrel curling iron as a wand. Don’t use the clamp; just hold the iron straight up and down and wrap one-inch sections of hair vertically around the barrel.
• Curl all pieces in the same direction so they link and create a smooth, glamorous, all-over wave.
• To keep the curl in place, finish with Bumble and bumble Spray de Mode hairspray, a product with hi-tech “memory hold.”

Erica Keene
Account Executive
On any given workday, Erica can be found at client meetings between Lancaster and York and social events by evening, making her a true on-the-go career woman. A flexible hairstyle is essential. Also, like many women with hooded eyelids, a beauty goal is makeup that seems to open her eyes wider.
Maggie’s makeup solution: Doe eyes
Tips to get this look:
• For a super-even makeup that hides sun damage, opt for a medium coverage product like Makeup Forever HD foundation.
• To make eyes look wider, use brown and gold shimmer shadows. “Shimmer on the inside area of the eyes opens them up,” explains King.
Line both upper and lower lash lines. King used a gel liner with a subtle wing on Erica’s upper lid and a shimmery brown shadow for her lower lash line.
• “Most women over forty lose the length and shape of their lashes,” King explains. “Because it’s smaller and flatter, a precision lash curler helps get close to the base and curl more precisely.”
• Mauve blush and berry-brown lip color look natural on tanner skin tones.
Missie’s hair solution: A loose half-updo
Tips to get this look:
• Don’t weigh hair down by wasting conditioner. In the shower, only apply conditioner to the ponytail section of your hair. Natural oils will condition hair closer to your scalp.
• Choose the right size brush. For fine hair, Missie recommends using a medium round brush rather than a large one.
• To create maximum volume, use a nozzle to blow dry sections of hair away from where it lays. Start at the top of the head and work down. “Using a nozzle is the key to every hairstyle,” says Missie.
• Create soft waves without heat. Roll hair around brush and allow hair to cool before releasing it, then create a small curl by rolling the section around your finger and clipping it in place.
• To create the updo, simply take one small section of hair from either side of your neck and tie them in a knot. Push a bobby pin up from the underside then “make a U-turn” and push it back down, Missie says.
• Define face-framing pieces with Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil and finish with Bumble and bumble Classic Hairspray.
In your 50s
Joyce Kutzner
Account Executive
Maggie’s makeup solution: Plum smoky eyes
Tips to get this look:
• For those with rosacea, foundation should sit on top of the skin instead of sinking in. A long-lasting light coverage product that still has full pigment will keep skin texture looking even.
• Pomade, gel, and powder from Anastasia Beverly Hills create the trifecta to fill bare gaps in Joyce’s brows while still looking natural.
• For a soft smoky eye, line eyes with a super-fine-tip marker liner, then smoke them out with a plum powder eye shadow.
• To fit Joyce’s peachy undertones, King used a medium-coverage under-eye concealer with a light peach hue.
• Here’s a trick: Keep mascara from getting on your upper cheeks or browbone by placing a business card under your lashes before applying product.
Whitney’s hair solution: Volume and bend
Tips to get this look:
• Spray Bumble and bumble Prep through hair to nourish and detangle fine, hair. Add Bumble and bumble Structure Styling Lotion for light hold.
• To create volume while retaining sleekness, use a nozzle while blowing down the hair shaft to dry.
• Once dry, use a straightener to give longer pieces a slight bend. Pay attention to your part. With higher volume looks, create a deep part to add balance.
• Complete the look with Bumble and bumble sumotech matte-finish wax and a spray of Bumble and bumble Does It All light-hold hairspray.
Sue Ottenheimer
Senior Account Executive
With the magazine since its start over 18 years ago, Sue has developed close relationships with businesses and advertisers in Lancaster County. She considers herself low-maintenance and prefers a beauty routine that matches that. Typical of most women her age, Sue looks for makeup that reduces fine lines and uneven tone under her eyes. But she's more likely to be talking football than makeup!
Maggie’s makeup solution: A minimal, natural look
Tips to get this look:
• Start by covering the face with a pore-filling primer that will fill fine lines and wrinkles. “Emollient products cause creasing, which would emphasize wrinkles,” says King.
• If you have short hair, remember to blend foundation not only down the neck, but also behind ears and on earlobes.
• As you age, eyesight often deteriorates. To avoid having to guesstimate where a straight line should go, smudge eyeliner for a less perfect but still intentional look.
• Here's a tip: “Dark under-eye areas look lighter if the upper eye makeup is darker,” says King.
• When it comes to under-eye circles, remember that all color correctors are not created equal. For Sue’s skin tone, a honey or peachy orange corrects her blue much better than a traditional yellow shade.
• Want to make a dramatic difference without much effort? “Lip gloss is an easy way to make it look like you’re trying,” King says. A rosy pink hue finished Sue’s look.
Missie’s hair solution: Short and to the point
Tips to get this look:
• Sue’s thick, curly hair can be frizz-prone. To combat this, use Bumble and bumble Straight Shampoo, Conditioner, and Blow Dry Crème.
• Don’t start styling when hair is completely wet. Rough dry hair with your fingers until it is 80 percent dry before defining curls with your fingers.
• To keep frizz-fighting throughout the day, run Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil from mid-shaft through the ends and finish with Bumble and bumble Classic Hairspray.
