Profiles of local organizations doing the greater good in our communities
The Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, a groundbreaking organization founded here in the Susquehanna Valley, is celebrating an important milestone. The first independent clinic in the world for cleft lips, palates and other craniofacial differences, the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic treats children and adults regardless of their ability to pay. This year the clinic, which services families throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrates its 75th anniversary with the Denim and Diamond Gala on May 17 at Bridge Acres Stable in Lancaster. This big bash for both the rustic and refined will include music, dancing and a live auction in a beautiful farm setting. Whiskey and Rye
If whiskey is your spirit of choice, take a trip to Lancaster’s new Thistle Finch Distillery. Housed in a large brick warehouse, this producer of small batch, traditional rye whiskey is known as Lancaster’s first distillery since Prohibition. Thistle Finch’s double-distilled whiskey, produced in a handcrafted still on site, is available in their small tasting room, in addition to classic whiskey cocktails and a rotating menu of signature drinks. If you’re savoring the flavor, you can grab a bottle to enjoy at home. Stop by for a taste Wednesday, Friday or Saturday, and keep an eye on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ThistleFinchDistillery, for food-truck stops and pop-up dinners.

Spice It Up
A new Vietnamese restaurant featuring the Southeast Asian broth and noodle specialty pho (pronounced fuh, for those who are wondering) has arrived on the West Shore. Named for the seven spices in the broth of its fragrant and full-bodied soup, Pho 7 Spice is dishing out Vietnamese delicacies every day and has something to offer every taste. Vegetarians can try the pho rau dau hu, a rice noodle soup with vegetable broth, vegetables and tofu: those with a more adventurous palate can try the Pho 7 Spice Special, with beef broth, sliced beef, flank steak, brisket, tendon, tripe and meatballs. Also be sure to order the shrimp- and pork-filled spring rolls, wrapped in soft rice paper with aromatic Thai basil, vermicelli noodles, lettuce and cucumber. Try a Vietnamese pressed espresso, too; it’s Pho 7 Spice’s own blend of coffee, brewed in a traditional Vietnamese press. Come in to enjoy a miniature Asian getaway, or call ahead to pick up a quick meal for the whole family.

The New Neutral
Sophisticated and neutral, taupe is a classic color that goes with everything, and Lancaster's newest boutique on the block knows a little something about that. "I want to be accessible to everyone, with a little L.A. flair, New York elegance and a touch of European I call 'cool style,'" says owner Barb Bidding. Whether it's college students coming in for an outfit to wear out on the town or a mom looking for a special occasion piece, there's something for everyone here, including accessories. "It's not about 'who' I'm carrying, but how I'm putting it together," she explains, which translates to better pricing than many designer labels. Bidding has come full circle in her career, having owned a boutique in Millersville in her 20s, followed by many years at Mercedes Benz of Lancaster; her powerful passion for fashion drew her back to the business. Watch the Taupe Facebook page for details on an open house event this month.
