Reader’s Lens: Susquehanna Valley Snapshots
This photo of a serene Lancaster County pasture was taken by local resident Edwin Huddle: “I came upon this pasture last year as I was driving around the Leola area. It so much reminded me of the cows that grazed behind the house where I grew up. It is such a timeless image because it could have been taken 50 years ago.”
His Bread & Butter
On a chilly March evening, hardly anything makes for a more satisfying meal than a hot bowl of soup and a slice of hard-crusted artisan bread. Local resident Thom Capizzi would agree. In fact, Capizzi’s love of good bread caused him to leave his former career in the apparel manufacturing industry, catering to clients like Ralph Lauren and the Gap, to create some decidedly smaller-scale goods. Thom’s Bread, based in Ephrata, now brings a wide variety of quality Italian breads to the Lititz and Lancaster areas—including a location at the popular Lancaster Central Market. Capizzi’s creations range in flavor from rustic Italian to savory rosemary olive oil to sweet chocolate made with local Wilbur Buds. The basis of each loaf is only water, flour, salt and yeast—proving that the secret to this bread’s success is its simplicity.

Gourmet To-Go
Local chef and restaurant-owner Ralph Mazzocchi departed from the norm with a new kind of Lancaster eatery—a “fusion of old-school deli and upscale cuisine.” A restaurant with Mazzocchi’s namesake, Ralph’s is fast becoming a Lancaster favorite for BLD—breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Slaymaker Building locale offers top-notch takeout sandwiches like the eggplant panini, with layers of fried eggplant, fontina cheese, romesco sauce and sun-dried tomato tapenade, or the chicken schnitzel sandwich, a baguette with breaded chicken cutlet, spicy shiitake spread, asiago and mesclun mix. Party planning? Ralph’s provides fuss-free catering eats such as mini wild mushroom quiches or sliced grilled duck breasts with kiln-dried cherries and port wine. We love Ralph's for a quick meal on the run that doesn’t sacrifice quality.
