Profiles of local organizations doing the greater good in our communities
The Greenhouse community organization is teaming up with Village Acre Farm & Foodshed for Squash Hunger, an event held during the weekend of Jan. 12-13. Local farmers who operate within community supported agriculture programs are donating hundreds of pounds of carrots, squash, onions, garlic and herbs, which would otherwise have been thrown away, for The Greenhouse to make into healthy soups for those in need. The soup will be made at the Village Acre Farm & Foodshed and served directly to 125 people. The leftovers will then be frozen in family-size containers and served to those who visit the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Soup Kitchen. Buttercream Dream
For cake artist Jasmine Clouser, the dream to expand her talents into a cupcake shop has finally become reality. This past fall, The Couture Cakery owner opened The Couture Cakery Cupcake Bar in the State Street Plaza in Lemoyne, across from the West Shore Farmers' Market. Clouser has also teamed up with two artists to display their work inside this new shop. Makeup artist Carmina Cristina displays her makeup and skincare products, and offers beauty seminars at her “beauty bar.” Jen Baltgavis Photography also showcases its work throughout the shop. Baltgavis is one of the first photographers with whom Clouser worked, and she photographs everything from children and families to seniors and weddings. The Cupcake Bar features Clouser’s cupcake tiers and cake toppers, and also offers cake classes for children and adults.
